Jewish Summer Festival

Jewish culture in Budapest

From 1998, each year the Jewish Summer Festival is being organised by the Jewish Community of Budapest. Yes, we have something like that in our capital! Three synagogues, one of them is the second largest synagogue in the world (and indeed, it’s stunning!), kosher shops, restaurants, Jewish travel agencies as well as a lively, colourful Jewish District packed with bars, clubs, restaurants, concert venues and a Sunday flea-market; all prove how deep, varied and unimaginable Jewish culture is in Budapest.

The festival

Throughout the years, the Jewish Summer Festival has become a renowned and exquisite cultural festival with international artists, attracting both Jews and non-Jews alike. Many consider this festival as the apropos of the best musical concerts in the country. Get prepared for mainly musical but in general all sorts of cultural impulses!

To name strictly one example of each, in brackets: you might go to exhibitions (Jews in Russia: revival of traditions), listen to refined music concerts (Budapest Ragtime Band), or Yiddish music concerts (Tango Apassionata in Yiddish – A Night with Sharon Brauner), operas (Gioacchino Rossini: Moses), take part in gastronomical journeys (Israeli Market Shuk in the Vásárcsarnok), or mix the two: traditional Jewish music AND gastronomy and the same time (Klezmer Night in Hotel Gellért), be charitable (Women artists for children – Charity gala for underprivileged children), watch theatrical performances (Karinthy-Kézdy Memorial Evening) and at last but not least, watch award-winner films (Hungarian REGINA).

Only problem is there’s so much to do in such little time! icon smile Jewish Summer Festival
